Kimberly Drew, known as @museummammy on her popular Twitter and Instagram accounts, is a writer, curator, and arts activist. After spending several years as the social media manager at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, she left to pursue writing full time. Her work has appeared in Vanity Fair, Teen Vogue, and Glamour. Along with Jenna Wortham, Drew is co-editing Black Futures, an anthology on the contemporary African-American experience, which will be released in 2020.

Dear Artist:

Fires do not start themselves.

As with love, desire, and passion

a fire needs a spark. As with

skill, a final product, or even

mastry — a fire needs a point

of origin and a bit of kindling.

Maybe there is already a

fire inside of you. Or, maybe

it's time to seek the flames 

of your potential futures.

Either way, don't fight the

warmth. Instead head towards

it. Let it enchant you. Let it

scare you. Let it rage. For

this fire is yours – yours to

burn, yours to share

and for that we are all

so very thankful.
